DAAS at Pride 2023
Chesterfield Pride 23rd July 2023: Raising Awareness of Alcohol and Substance Use within the LGBTQ+ Community.
As we gear up for the much-anticipated Chesterfield Pride on Sunday July 23rd, 2023, we are excited to announce DAAS, Stand To, and DRP at the event for the second year. We will be raising awareness of alcohol and substance use within the LGBTQ+ community. We invite everyone to come over, have a chat, and ask questions to better understand the issues at hand.
Studies and evidence have shown that individuals within the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to develop a problematic relationship with alcohol. Some key statistics highlight the need for increased awareness:
- Frequency of Alcohol Consumption: Approximately 16% of LGBTQ+ individuals report consuming alcohol nearly every day. This number significantly rises to 33% among those aged over 65.
- Mental Health Conditions and Coping Mechanisms: The LGBTQ+ community faces higher rates of mental health conditions due to exposure to bullying and discrimination. Alcohol can sometimes become a coping mechanism in response to these challenges.
- Societal Pressures and Identity: The pressures of societal expectations, stigma, and coming to terms with one’s sexual or gender identity can contribute to increased vulnerability towards alcohol use and substance abuse.
DAAS, Stand To, and DRP hope raise awareness of the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in relation to alcohol use, emphasising the importance of seeking support and resources, to help to create a safer and healthier community by helping to support open conversations about alcohol and substance use, encouraging individuals to share their experiences, concerns, and questions without judgment.
